CHAPTER FORTY-NINE
Carter
Four days. It has only been four days. But I swear to god, itâs been four years, and Iâm starting to smell like it. Nighttime is still my favorite time because I get to be alone with my guys, but it has started to take on that olâ lost-in-the-jungle flavor that is somehow both disgusting and familiar at the same time. Iâm starting to feel bad for my blankets and the soft cushions inside this carriage.
The current goal is to be under the jungle trees in two days. Two days. Ugh. And to think when we started out we were supposed to be at our destination already. Exhausted, yeah, but there. At least we would have made some fucking progress.
Now, thanks to me, and thanks to Aukâs stupid plan of having me act like a girl, we are stopping once in the middle of the day to eat and fairly early in the evenings to camp and relax. We donât leave again until the morning is warming up.
I.
Am getting.
So. Fucking. Tired.
Of seeing.
Each.
Individual stalk of reedsâ
âor grass, or whatever the hell this plant isâ
âdrift by. Like this.
And actually, itâs even slower than that.
My noble fleafâakhie warriors feel really bad about âwhat they did to meâ, so every time one of them wants something or wants to talk, it starts out with a very deep bow that I am supposed to acknowledge and notice. This is harder to do when weâre marching along, so Captain Erâad comes near and just hangs his head like heâs super sad, his hands clasped behind his back.
For a while, I ignore him.
No, Iâm not hungry. No, I donât want to stop. No, Iâm not afraid. No, I donât want you to bring me anything. Yes, Iâm actually doing just fine since the last time you checked on me, which was two hours ago.
We havenât been marching that long since breakfast.
But it turns out, even answering his annoying questions is less boring than just sitting here all day.
âWhat is it?â
Both my tone and my words have become far less polite than they ought to be while a scientist who may want to study me in a cage is coming to meet us halfway. My understanding is that the elites have absolutely no intention of handing me over, and I can logically acknowledge that none of these warriors are the bad guys. Not anymore. Since Iâve convinced them Iâm an innocent little omega, the fleafâakhie warriors are just a bunch of very annoying nannies.
âOmega, has my singing been pleasant to you? It is hard to tell. I only want to make your trip easier, but I overheard you suggest that, uh, perhaps I should be silent.â
Ouch. God, Carter, youâre an asshole.
Exactly what I said was, âI wish heâd shut the hell up.â To Siel, who spent some time with me not too long ago. I like seeing them, but I would like walking with them more.
That is why weâll stop for lunch soon. So I can get some exercise.
